2025 Prairie Lakes Plein Air Guidelines
Open class is for those who are new to plein air painting and learning about the sport. Anyone is welcome to register and participate. Art of the Lakes will present a best-of-open-class recognition award on Saturday following the quick paint competition. There will be an opportunity to get feedback from the judge on your work.
Competition Class is for the competing painters who wish to win prizes and recognition. Competition paintings will be on display through September 27, 2025.
You must agree to the following items when you register..

You must agree to the following items when you register..
- Authentication must be presented with location, by submitting a photograph with the entry, and of the entry in situ.
- Entries must be created in Otter Tail County, MN. At least 90% of the painting must be produced outdoors, on location, and in the spirit of Plein Air. No classwork, please.
- Registered artists agree to respect private property owners (by securing permission to go onto their property) and public lands (by following the use regulations of the various land management agencies, i.e. obtaining necessary use permits, staying on designated roads and trails, etc.).
- Attach a label to the back of your artwork. Please include your name, the painting's title, size, medium, the price of your work, and your phone number.
- All paintings must be framed and have wire on the back for hanging. Maximum artwork size not to exceed 24” x 30” including the frame. A limit of 3 paintings can be submitted for judging. (frame not required for open class)
- All PLPA artwork displayed by AOTL must be for sale and is subject to a 30% commission to AOTL & 70% to the artist. This includes the quick paint paintings and artwork sold before the Awards Ceremony if it will compete. If you want to leave your quick paint painting through the end of the exhibit, have it framed and wired. Any artwork not picked up or arrangements made becomes the property of Art of the Lakes.
- Checks for the sale of artwork will be mailed within a month of the closing of the PLPA gallery show.
- Images of artists and artwork produced during the Prairie Lakes Plein Air Competition 2025 may be used in publicity (website, posters, advertisements, etc.)
- All artists must fill out and submit the artwork intake form for the entries online. Entry artwork is due at the gallery by Thursday, August 28, by 2 pm.
- Liability Release: By clicking REGISTER below, I release Art of the Lakes and all related volunteers from any liability claims that might arise because of accident or injury to myself or damage or theft of my artwork during all Prairie Lakes Plein Air Competition 2025 activities from June 21 through August 28, 2025.
