The Art of Hardanger
Hardanger with Mary Williams
Mary has been doing Hardanger for over thirty years after learning this artform from a group of ladies at the senior citizen’s center in Battle Lake. Hardanger embroidery is a simple form of “whitework embroidery” often used on linens, pillows, caps, and more. This form of hand embroidery uses counted thread, pulled thread, and drawn threadwork techniques to create geometric shapes and even pictures! Named after a region in southwest Norway, Hardanger is traditionally white thread on white linen or cloth; however, contemporary pieces often feature a myriad of colored threads and fabrics. It includes needle weaving sewn in the hand rather than a hoop. June 5, 12, 19 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM $75 / $60 non-members / members includes the kit Location: Art of the Lakes Gallery |
The Elemental Concepts in Art
with Calvin DeRuyter
Each session is a "stand alone session" that covers a specific element of art. Over the 5-weeks, the individual sessions will focus on Composition, Line, Shape, Value and Intensity, and Depth. The intent of each class is to give the participants ways to look at their own art, exploring how each of those elements can be explored and expanded for their own use. And, since all of these elements apply to 2-dimensional art no matter the medium used or the genre used (landscape, still life, portrait, abstract, etc.) the class is open to all 2-dimensional artists. Students will work on their own art and in their own medium during the open part of the class. I will present a slide show of how other artists looked at and exploited those elements in their art; explore a class exercise on that particular element; and then be a catalyst to "push" the artist to look at their own art in new ways. Students will provide their own supplies Wednesdays, 10 AM-12 PM Registration $30 / $25 per session non-members / members Location: Glendalough State Park |
Keeping a Sketch Book

Join Grace Haverty as she guides students through the process of keeping a sketch book. This class will go outside for a short time to sketch a building. This can be purchased at Lundeens. June 28, 9 am - 4 pm After May 15th registration $50 / $45 per session non-members / members Location: LACC |
Painting with a Prismatic Palette
Oil Plein Air with Jack Dant
This course will provide a demonstration and overview of the plein air painting process using a Payne’s Grey underpainting and the prismatic palette to create the effect of atmosphere and distance in a painting created on location. Students will be invited to initiate their own painting during the class, and the instructor will be present during the open paint for further consultation. In the event of rain, the class will be taught indoor from photographic reference supplied by the instructor. Materials Needed: Oil Paints, preferably one warm and one cool version of each primary color (example: Cad Yellow light and Cad Yellow, Orange, Red, Alizarine Crimson, Cerulean Blue and Ultramarine Blue), white and black – the instructor’s primary brand is Winsor Newton Artist Colors (Not Winton); at least one painting panel or stretched canvas, preferably linen, approximately 9”x12”; Brushes (Bristle brushes are preferred); a portable painting easel (French easel, pochade box, or similar; a palette cup for medium; paper towels, portable brush cleaner, odorless mineral spirits, linseed oil (instructor will bring if not available), plastic bag for garbage, bag to carry all gear, etc. Students may contact the instructor in the event that they do not have access to a portable easel to make arrangements to borrow one at no cost. Painting with a Limited Palette
Plein Air Oil with Matt Kania
Matt Kania is a plein air and studio oil painter who lives and creates original works of art from his home base of Duluth. Matt’s paintings are often cited for their authenticity – capturing the experience of a landscape or a unique moment in time. As a result, many of Matt’s works go beyond pure landscape as a subject. Often they include cultural features or display humans’ interaction with their environment. July 16, 2023, 1 - 4 pm Registration $30 / $25 per session non-members / members Location: Glendalough State Park |

Fun with YUPO
With Jim Turner
This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring the unique characteristics of YUPO. YUPO is a smooth inorganic (plastic) surface that accepts paint in a very different way than paper. Because the paint sits on the surface instead of being absorbed, it flows, mixes and can give a very fluid abstract “liquid” look to washes that can be very appealing (and frustrating, if you are trying to “control” it.) The surface also allows colors to be more intense, giving a stained glass look that is amazing, and makes lifting easy, allowing a push-pull method of composition similar to working with opaque paints. This workshop is intended to give you a variety of ways to approach the unique characteristics of YUPO. We will take advantage of the abstract, flowing ‘liquid’ look of wet in wet application and experiment with stamping, texturing, lifting and even texturing with foam rollers. We will talk about design and how to go from the crazy accidental abstraction of YUPO to finished work. We will also talk about “taming” YUPO to do representational work, flattening washes, graded washes etc. Come if you are a beginner and want to have fun playing with paint, if you are an accomplished watercolorist who wants to explore a new surface, or anyone in between who wants to expand their horizons and try something new. I turn to YUPO when I want to “play” with watercolor and just have fun. The participant can expect to finish at least a couple completed or nearly completed paintings in the two days. August 17, 18 from 9 am - 4 pm After May 15th registration $100 / $90 non-members / members Location: Glendalough State Park |
