In most rural areas, young people have fewer entertainment and extracurricular opportunities than in big cities. This can lead to boredom and even risky behaviors.

The good news is that the arts can provide exciting and meaningful ways for rural youth to express themselves, learn new skills, and connect with others.
Art programs, whether in schools or community centers, give kids and teens a creative outlet. Painting, music, theater, and dance allow them to explore their emotions and ideas in a safe space, helping kids channel their energy into creating something unique.

These benefits were on full display at the end of March, when Art of the Lakes hosted a Regional Art Tournament and a youth theater performance in Battle Lake.

The MSHSL Regional Art Tournament brought together talented students from eight area high schools. Kids exhibited their amazing artwork at the Creative Arts Center and competed in multiple categories for the honor of moving on to the State contest.

Art of the Lakes provided competing students with mini-workshops in paper-making, ceramics, origami, cold wax, watercolor batik and illustration. Local artists Kristi Kuder, Jonathan Hartman, Sandra Thimgan, Vicky Radel, Ruth Hanson and Paul Johnson shared their talents and insights with the students, and the kids soaked it up. Many thanks to West Central Initiative for providing funding for this art education program.

On the same weekend, eleven youth actors ages eight to twelve performed Seussical JR., a colorful children's musical. After weeks of rehearsal, team-building and making new friends, the kids gave two performances that packed the Creative Arts Center Auditorium. Kudos to the actors, director Kaele Peterson, supportive parents and LRAC for making this a success!

Art opportunities such as these give young people a sense of accomplishment. It also shows kids that their voices matter.

By investing in the arts, communities can help their young people thrive. Learn how you can get involved.
