Lakes Area Community Center, Battle Lake Join Grace, an accomplished artist and teacher as she explores flowers and birds in watercolor. You can sign up for one or for the series of two workshops. Learn how to compose an interesting painting by establishing a focal point. Practice mixing colors, massing in forms and using the right techniques to create your own unique painting. This workshop is packed with demos and guided practice. Regardless of your level of experience, you'll leave with an inspiring collection of artwork, and the skills, concepts, and confidence to take your painting to a higher level. Learn the Art of Hardanger with Mary Williams

9 to 12 noon Art of the Lakes Gallery, Battle Lake Mary has been doing Hardanger for over thirty years after learning this artform from a talented group of ladies at the senior citizen’s center in Battle Lake. This is an introductory course with all materials provided. Hardanger embroidery is a simple form of “whitework embroidery” often used on linens, pillows, caps, and more. This form of hand embroidery uses counted thread, pulled thread, and drawn threadwork techniques to create geometric shapes and even pictures! You'll leave with a Hardanger sampler to cherish. Sculpt a Torso in Clay with Mary Williams
Mondays, June 27 & July 25
9 to 3 pm Williams Studio, Stuart Lake Join Mary Williams at her studio on Stuart Lake where she will guide you in a two-day workshop creating a sculpted head and torso in clay. The first day will be focused on learning various clay hand building techniques from a live model. The second day will be focused on the glazing process. Registration fee includes all tools and materials. Mary is an accomplished sculptor who received her formal training from the Art Institute of Chicago. Over the years, she has exhibited her work throughout the region receiving numerous awards including an LRAC McKnight Fellowship in 2000. In 2002, Mary was selected to sculpt a monument celebrating the Otter Tail County Historical Society’s 75th Anniversary. The piece, a life-sized limestone sculpture of a seated Ojibwe woman, overlooks West Battle Lake from her scenic spot in Halvorson Park. Member/Non-member $150/$165 |

6 - 8 pm Art of the Lakes Gallery Join us in this free introductory class to screenprinting as we create designs to be used on Chief Wenonga Day as part of a community outreach art project. Although this class is free, our space is limited so we ask that you register. As an attendee you will learn how to prepare silkscreens for a fun screen printing project. This easy and simple method has endless possibilities. We will provide the supplies for the project; you may choose one of our designs or bring your own ideas. We ask that the design be themed around Battle Lake since we'll be using them on Saturday, July 23, Chief Wenonga Day. This is a free activity but registration is recommended |

Basketweaving with Mary Smith

10 am - 4 pm Glendalough State Park (Park pass required) Learn to weave a versatile diagonally woven basket that can either be hung on the wall or on a doorknob. Some color choices of dyed reed will be available. You are welcome to bring lunch, snacks, beverages. All materials will be provided with a short list of supplies the student should bring. Mary's basket weaving adventure began during the 12 years she lived in northern Kentucky, where this craft/art is a time-honored tradition and nearly every county has a basket weavers guild. She & her husband moved back to Minnesota in May 2011 where she has continued to learn new techniques and perfect her skills. Professionally, she is a member of the Headwaters Basket Weavers Guild, the Minnesota Basket Weavers Guild and the National Basketry Organization and has baskets for sale at the Art of the Lakes Gallery in Battle Lake. “It's a pleasure to share the experience of basket weaving through small-group instruction and seeing the look of satisfaction on a person’s face when their basket is completed”. 10 am to 4 pm Glendalough State Park (Park pass required) Wax and watercolor sound like an unusual combination, but put them together on rice paper and you create a distinctive painting! Here's your opportunity to learn this amazing artform from watercolor batik artist, Ruth Hansen. Join her for an intensive 2-day hands-on workshop in beautiful Glendalough State Park! She will be guiding you through the process step-by-step. You will have an opportunity to create your own composition as you apply her techniques. Come with ideas or reference photos to work from. She's been an art teacher and instructed workshops for over 30 years in a variety of mediums. Landscapes in Oil Pastel with Stephen Henning

10 am to 4 pm Glendalough State Park (State Park Pass required) Join landscape painter, Stephen Henning, for a day in beautiful Glendalough State Park and discover the joy of working with oil pastels. Henning, a signature member of the Oil Pastel Society, will share his approach to color and technique in capturing the landscape, working direct and on location. Henning likes to help artists gain a clearer focus on their subject, and has valuable insights to share on seeing color, reflections, and more. We’ll meet in the Trail Center (where there’s a refrigerator to keep your lunch). We can work indoors if it’s rainy, but we will move outdoors if it’s nice. Dress appropriately. Expressive Watercolor with Dan Mondloch

10 am to 4 pm Glendalough State Park Trail Center (State Park Pass required) Through Dan's casual demonstrations and clear explanations, students will see and understand how to simplify any scene into a series of watercolor washes that capture the essence of a subject without getting stuck on unnecessary details. This is designed as a studio workshop, however if there is class interest we can move outside to do plein air. This 2-day workshop is for intermediate/advanced level watercolor painters. A State Park Pass is required and can be purchased for $7. (Day pass) upon entering the park or obtained for free at the Fergus Public Library. Remember to bring a lunch. Materials list Dan is an award winning third-generation painter. His first interest in painting was in the 9th grade; while driving with his dad he mentioned he’d like to try painting. The next morning he woke to the kitchen table covered with everything he could ever possibly need to paint a picture. He’s been featured in Plein Air Today and Southwest Art Magazine.
